TLG was set up in response to the announcement of Your Party, aiming to
intervene in Your Party to build a member-controlled party to fight for a
worker-controlled government, with trans liberation at its core. Our
Demands, Member Expectations, and Interim Governance Structure were
established to allow us to quickly intervene in the party’s Founding
Conference.
Our Interim Governance Structure contains a commitment to draft a new
constitution once the position and trajectory of Your Party became clearer,
and now that we have seen that opportunities for working within Your Party
to build the party that we need have been significantly diminished, both
from what they were when the party was announced and from what we hoped they
would be, we have begun that process, to establish ourselves as an
independent organisation, working with people in Your Party, other parties,
and no party at all, to build a nation-wide socialist organisation for trans
liberation.
We are still working with our interim structure, but we have already begun
drafting our new constitution, and are working towards holding a refounding
conference, where we will officially discuss, vote on, and adopt a Trans
Liberation Group Constitution to replace this interim structure.
Joining Trans Liberation Group
The Trans Liberation Group (TLG) is a member organisation of trans
activists and cis allies from across the British left who are committed
to building a nation-wide organisation for trans liberation. Some of us
are experienced campaigners, some of us are part of other organisations,
and for some this is their first foray into political organisation; we
are all united in the struggle for trans liberation. The liberation of
all marginalised people can only be achieved through their active and
equal participation in class struggle; there can only be a precarious
freedom for some under current conditions. We are not a pressure group,
a charity or a social endeavour - it is our prerogative to build an
explicitly socialist political organisation to win trans liberation
through organised action and active campaigning. We welcome all who can
contribute to these ends and agree to follow our member expectations.
Member expectations
-
We are here to organise and have an impact on the founding of Your
Party. There is a need for swift and considered action to be ready
in time.
-
The Trans Liberation Group has a list of demands that make up our preliminary platform - you must be aligned with these
to join the group.
-
We are a democratic organisation and welcome members to contribute
their opinions and engage in comradely debate. Once a collective
decision is made:
-
It becomes group policy and it becomes the duty of members to
honour it and carry out actions related to its implementation.
-
Members who disagree are entitled to hold minority opinions and
organise internally to revisit the issue on future occasions.
-
Members with minority opinions are not to be discriminated
against, bullied or excluded.
-
To ensure the swift running of meetings, members are expected to:
-
Submit any agenda points, documents or motions in good time to
the meeting chair so that members have ample time to familiarise
themselves.
-
Read through published materials ahead of time when they are
made available. This is of particular importance if you are
wishing to contribute to a debate regarding any documents.
-
Raise their hand if they wish to contribute. The chair will call
you to contribute.
- Speak respectfully and constructively to fellow members.
-
Be aware of time limits and maintain relevancy to the agenda.
-
Due to the fact we are a trans organisation and may be targeted by
external malicious actors, members are expected to:
-
Keep the composition (including membership) of this group
private to protect individual participants. We wish all comrades
the opportunity to present as their authentic selves in the TLG.
-
Maintain confidentiality regarding any documents, policies or
debates not marked for dissemination to the public.
-
Members are expected to attend all member meetings and give
apologies when unable to make meetings. This will take the form of a
message to the chair of the meeting or letting another comrade in
attendance read out your apologies.
-
There is an expectation to be part of organising within TLG -
this can take the form of active participation in a working
group, attending meetings, submitting proposals or contributing
to the debate. Organising within Your Party and promoting the
TLG programme is a valid form of participation. Talking in
instant messaging chats is not considered an active form of
participation.
-
If a member misses meetings consistently, or doesn’t fulfil the
activity set out in 6a, without submitting apologies, the member
will be contacted by someone within the Steering Committee or
delegated authority to discuss barriers to participation and
future membership of the group. If there is no response for a
month after at least three contact attempts to have this
conversation they will be removed for inactivity.
-
If members feel like they are struggling to fulfill duties, are
having difficulties, or don’t know where to start, please reach
out to members of the Steering Committee or other delegated
authority.
We also recommend that prospective members read our
governance structure
before joining although this is not required and will be explained during
the onboarding process.
